Sense of Wonder

Tonight I watched my daughter discovering, yet again, something new and magical. The water was pouring into the bathtub with a vengeance, her back towards the spout. The sound of the roaring waterfall makes her head spin around with curiosity. I happily turn her so she can learn with her other senses. Her right hand reaches upward as she observes where the water is coming from. She feels the water's softness fighting through her tiny little fingers causing her face to get splashed and she blinks against her will. She repeats the action and smiles. Next, she looks down to where the water is smashing onto the textured tub, causing it to break into a million pieces. She looks confused. Her hands explore some more. At one point, Sydney actually leans in to taste the anomaly and instantly learns that was a bad idea. She recovers quickly and without fright. Her amazement never ceases.

I sat outside that bathtub and admired Sydney's inquisitiveness for quite some time. She probably would have stayed in there all night had I allowed her. This age is so much fun. The way they try and learn, hands on, about the world around them. I wonder at what point in our lives do we loose that sense of wonder? You see it everyday in people you've never met. Hell, I've seen it in people I know. They let their lives become dull and routine. They are miserable and just don't care. Maybe they are content in just being comfortable. Life is all about learning, growing, and finding beauty in everything around us. I truly hope I never loose my sense of wonder. How sad would that be?!
