Power Nazis

The past couple days have been pretty eventful. I've been itching to write and my computer was unusable. But, I'm back in business now with lots to blog about! Hmmm, where to begin. Let's start from last month...

Jason had given me the job of paying the bills online each month through his bank. Well, last month the online BillPay wasn't working. My cute (but LAZY) boyfriend was too busy working his butt off that he never took care of it. Another month goes by. He doubles up on all the bills, and sets the posting day for a suitable date, not taking into account a five-day window to clear.

So on Wednesday, September tenth, at 10:00am, the power is turned off.

If Hell had a temperature, I'm pretty sure that's how hot it was in my house. Did I mention I lived in the desert? How about how we have no blinds and one entire side of my house consumed with windows? I was in one miserable little hot-box.

Concerned about Sydney, I immediately call Jason who spends the next few HOURS arguing with the bank and power company. Simply put, we didn't pay the bill so the Power Nazis cut us off. The bank couldn't tell us when the check was going to clear, even though they had already taken the money out. The power company was however, kind enough (for a $190 fee) to send someone out "by 8:30 that night, or by tomorrow". They didn't give a shit that we had a baby. There was no promise of a time frame. I watched the thermostat degrees creeping up one by one as they made their way to 90.

Sydney was surprisingly content as long as she was suctioned to my breast every 30 minutes. I began thinking about the positives in the situation. Things like "it's a good thing we didn't go food shopping on Monday like we were supposed to", and how I discovered yet another benefit of breastfeeding: not having to worry about warming up my baby's food during a power outage. Then it hit me. MY FROZEN BREAST MILK IS MELTING! Months and months of pumping about to literally go down the drain. And what about all that baby food I so proudly made? That had breast milk in it too! I had to think quick.

An unlikely friend came to my rescue and happily drove all the way to my house and transported it back to her freezer. It was a good thing too, because the next morning (yesterday) we still had no power. Happy Birthday to me. My freezer was leaking all over the kitchen and the refrigerator had already begun to smell. Another friend picked up Sydney an me to take us to the mall to cool down. We came back home around 4:30 and the power had just been turned back on. The clock on the cable box was not even updated yet.

The happy ending to my story is we made it through alive. My daughter was cool and happily asleep in her crib when a babysitter came over so Jason and I could go out to enjoy a comedy show for my birthday. Best of all, I got to wear heels for the first time since I was pregnant.

The end.
