Iron is an element that is essential to human life. On the contrary, too much can be toxic. Do you know what else iron causes? Constipation. We were going on four days of Sydney not pooping when she finally screamed out a couple hard, round, turds. I had called the doctor, who recommended giving her an ounce of prune juice. That certainly did the trick. She woke up this morning with an unbelievable amount of baby crap. Oddly, it didn't smell and I had no idea she had pooped until I changed her diaper. Shortly after changing her, another followed. Blueberry muffins. That's what it smelled like. My baby probably feels tremendous relief and I'm smelling blueberry muffins coming out of her.
At her last appointment, Sydney was prescribed a liquid vitamin that includes vitamins A, C, D, fluoride, and iron. There are warnings all over the box about iron-containing products being a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under the age of six and when the pharmacist questioned the dosage and explained that most babies are given HALF of what Sydney was prescribed, I got a little worried. I trust my doctor 100%. I did not go to medical school. But, I am a new mom and I worry about everything of course. I'm still taking my prenatals and Syd get's iron-fortified rice cereal every morning. I guess I will be calling him on Monday so I can relax about it. Relax and enjoy her blueberry-muffin-shit.
